What Is Darvocet?
Until recently, Darvocet was a popular pain medication that combined acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol) with propoxyphene (the active ingredient in the painkiller Darvon). Darvocet was approved by the FDA in 1972 after a review of the results of seven drug trials submitted by Eli Lilly & Company, even though five of the seven trials showed the propoxyphene component of Darvocet was no more effective than a placebo.
While the use of Darvocet has diminished and been replaced by newer, more effective pain medications, it is estimated that 120 million prescriptions have been filled in the United States for propoxyphene-based medications since 2005. This class of drugs is among the 40 most commonly prescribed in the United States.
Darvocet and other medications in the propoxyphene class of drugs are dangerous. The risk of accidental overdose and death were several reasons these drugs were taken off the market in Great Britain six years ago. Even when taken as directed, research shows that Darvocet can cause cardiac irregularities and a deadly condition known as ventricular tachycardia. These potentially fatal side effects were not noted in the changes made to Darvocet’s product labeling in 2009, even though they were well documented in research studies.
